The train terminal in Rekkem will undergo a major modernization by 2028

REKKEM – The rail terminal at the LAR logistics site in Rekkem will undergo a major modernization by 2028. Thanks to an investment of over 5.25 million euros , the terminal will be upgraded to accommodate freight trains up to 750 meters long can be handled more efficiently.

Currently, the terminal has three loading and unloading tracks with a maximum length of approximately 450 meters. This limits the length of the freight trains that can use the terminal. The planned work will bring the infrastructure into compliance with the European standard of 750 meters.

The expansion is intended to ensure that trains can be loaded, unloaded, and, if necessary, split up more quickly. This will increase the terminal’s capacity and make rail freight transport more efficient.

The LAR terminal plays an important role in container transport in the region. Today, more than a hundred companies already use its transshipment facilities. With this modernization, the partners involved hope to make the region even more attractive for sustainable rail freight transport.

The project has a total value of 5.25 million euros and is funded

through a collaboration between the European Union, the Province of West Flanders, Leiedal and the Provincial Development Corporation.

The work must be completed by 2028 and represent an important step in the further development of rail freight transport in West Flanders.
