AALST – When you think of Aalst, carnival, local beers, and historic buildings like the Belfry and St. Martin’s Church quickly come to mind. Yet there’s another special place in the city that many rail enthusiasts know well: OVMV Aalst, the Aalst model railroad club. TrainNews paid a visit to the club and discovered an organization where model railroading, craftsmanship, and camaraderie go hand in hand.

When you walk into the club, you immediately notice how much work and passion has gone into the various model railroads. In total, the club has four model railroads, built using different track systems and scales.
One of the absolute highlights is the large Aalst model train layout. This layout depicts the area around Aalst Station as it looked around the year 2000 . Thanks to extensive research and an eye for detail, the area around the station was recreated as realistically as possible.
From buildings and streets to signals and rail infrastructure: everything was meticulously crafted to give visitors a realistic picture of what Aalst used to look like.

Perhaps what stood out most during our visit was the warm atmosphere within the club.
The members form a close-knit group where everyone knows each other and is happy to help. New visitors are greeted warmly and quickly feel welcome.
The club also has a cozy bar where members and visitors can relax and chat over a drink after building or running trains. That makes OVMV Aalst much more than just a model railroad club; it’s also a gathering place for people who share a common passion.

Whether you've been building model railroads for years or are just starting to get interested in the hobby, everyone is welcome at OVMV Aalst.
The club offers a variety of activities:
building model railroads;
creating landscapes and buildings;
electronics and digital control systems;
maintenance of rolling stock;
Enjoying a fun time together with model trains.
Anyone who enjoys working with their hands or being creative will undoubtedly find a challenge there.
