NMBS is celebrating its 100th anniversary today

BRUSSELS – Today, July 23, 2026, the National Society of Belgian Railways (NMBS) celebrates its 100th anniversary. Exactly one century ago, the law was passed that led to the establishment of the Belgian railway company.

For a hundred years, NMBS has played an important role in our country’s mobility. Every day, the railway company transports hundreds of thousands of passengers to work, school, or their destinations, and connects cities, towns, and regions with one another.

A Century of Railroad History

Since its founding in 1926, the NMBS has undergone an impressive evolution. From the steam locomotives of the early years to the modern M7 double-deckers and the latest electric locomotives, the Belgian rail system has continually adapted to the times.

Over the years, NMBS has grown to become one of Belgium's leading public transportation companies and has played a significant role in the country's economic and social development.

Anniversary Year

To mark its centennial, the NMBS is organizing various activities throughout the year. For example, it previously held a special 2-euro commemorative coin

was proposed, and a series of stamps was issued in honor of the anniversary.

Later this year, a historic anniversary train will pass through Schaarbeek, Liège-Guillemins, and Antwerp Central. Visitors will have the opportunity to admire historic railway equipment up close.

The program also includes concerts at train stations, a podcast series, an exhibition at Train World, and open house days at the central workshops in Mechelen and Salzinnes.
